One of the dominant features of the age of globalization is the rampant expansion of organization and, with it, the expansion of ideas and practices for the management and governance of organizations. This course is devoted to sociological and global analysis of such expansions, giving special attention to cross-cultural matters in the workplace: cross-cultural encounters that are driven by the globalization of organization and management theories of such cross-cultural encounters.
The course is designed for experiential learning, focusing on the challenges posed by multi-cultural, transnational work environments. We will combine classroom discussions with an international team-based exercise. In the classroom we will review and discuss issues relating to transnational work: from the structure of the multinational modern firm, to transnational human resource practices, to management expertise, to cultural intelligence. In addition, students will collaborate with other graduate students in 8 universities worldwide to create virtual teams, working in teams of 3-5 students from across the various universities to complete a specified project. Through a combination of discussions and the transnational team-based project, students will learn about, as well as experience first hand, the challenges of working in teams that mix languages, experiences, norms, and…time zones.
The transnational team-based project is short in duration and thus intensive: it will be held between 31 October to 28 November 2017. Therefore, in spite of the proximity to the start of HUJI’s academic year, students must commit to enrolling in this course (and thus participating in the project) by Thursday, 26 October 2017.
